Starting out as a young attorney from a rural Arizona county, Robert Brutinel said he never aspired to the highest court in the state, let alone the top judicial post.

But this week, after more than 40 years in the state's legal system, the near-native of Prescott prepares to retire, at age 66, from a 14-year stint on the Arizona Supreme Court, the last five years of which were served as Chief Justice.
