A newly renovated public shooting range in Scott County opens Wednesday.
The Cody Shooting Complex, located at 30245 220th Ave. Long Grove, Iowa, just west of McCausland, will offer a 30-yard handgun and a 100-yard long gun ranges for shooters of all skill levels, according to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
The site was formerly the privately owned DLS Gun Club.
The shooting range's facilities and 16.8 acres of primarily agricultural land with a small pond and wooded area to the east were donated to the Iowa Department of Resources in 2016.
Renovations have been underway for the past two years, with the first phase of construction now complete. Scott County, which is running the day-to-day operations of the complex, advertised this fall for range attendants.

The ranges will have covered stalls with standing and seated bench stations, according to the IDNR. It will offer a variety of steel targets and paper target stands with some designated for rimfire, handgun, rifle, shotgun or muzzloader use. Both ranges have cement pathways that connect between the stalls to accommodate shooters with limited mobility.

With the Cody Shooting Complex slated to open, the Iowa DNR closed the Princeton shooting range Dec. 2. The Princeton range will undergo a reclamation process, be restored to natural habitat and reopen as part of the Princeton Wildlife Area for public access and hunting, according to the DNR.
At the Cody Shooting Complex, a second construction phase is expected to begin in 2025 for an administrative building, 50-seat classroom and archery range. The estimated $2 million project is expected to wrap up in 2026, according to the DNR.
"The classroom will allow us to host hunter education classes, local school groups, offer programming by the (Scott County) conservation board and courses for law enforcement," said Gavin Tigges, Cody Shooting Complex coordinator with the Scott County Conservation Board, in a prepared news release. "This complex is worth the wait -- it has a lot to offer."
Including in the design is a law enforcement-only section for local law enforcement training with firearm instructors. That range will offer flexible distances from 5-100 yards and lighting for low-light training.
