Brush fires break out across New Hampshire; NWS issues red flag warning

The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning after fire danger levels in the southern half of New Hampshire were considered to be "very high" this weekend. The warning will go into effect Sunday at 8 a.m. and conclude at 6 p.m.NWS issues red flag warning in effect Sunday in southern half of New HampshireFire safety experts said this week's dry air can be a catalyst for extreme fire behavior. "Any fire that's been kindled that's out of control or unintentional, it could've stemmed from a campfire. With the wind, it can bring branches down," said Capt. Michael Davenport with the Bedford Fire Department. On Saturday, fire officials said several wildfires broke out as a result of the gusty winds and low humidity, including in Troy, New Ipswich, Litchfield and Canaan. According to Chief Steven Sherman with the Forest Protection Bureau, each of those wildfires burned about an acre or more of land.Sherman said forest rangers responded to several of those wildfires, supplying aid to local fire departments as they battled the blazes. Officials said no crew members were hurt in the process. With the warning in place until Sunday night, fire officials have put a ban on outdoor burning."Any yard cleanup you thought might be a good idea to do by burning a brush -- we don't want to see you do that," said Davenport. "Sitting around a campfire is nice, but when those embers go up, they have to come down somewhere so that can light something as simple as the leaves in your yard on fire."Fire officials said a high fire danger warning is not uncommon in the fall but is typically seen in the spring. Amid dry conditions, Sherman said New Hampshire residents will be declined if they request a fire permit this weekend."You do need a fire permit in the state of New Hampshire before you can do any outside burning, so you need to check with your local fire department. They're going to tell you right now they're not going to issue you a permit," Sherman said.
