Nearly 350,000 counterfeit items seized and detained at port

A report released by Suffolk Trading Standards warned customers to 'be on their guard' after nearly 400,000 products were seized in Suffolk this year.

The report noted that since January 349,000 goods were checked by the Suffolk Trading Standards Team at the Port of Felixstowe who found them to be unsafe or non-compliant.

Graham Crisp, head of Suffolk Trading Standards, said: "The Port of Felixstowe is a huge gateway to the UK and our officers work extremely hard to intercept these dangerous items before they reach the marketplace.

"However unsafe goods can still slip through and I urge the public to be on the lookout for them and to let us know as soon as they come across them."

Among the other detained products were 300 air-fryers, 900 pet heating blankets, 3,000 fan heaters and 2,000 wall chargers - all deemed unsafe.

Councillor Steve Wiles (Image: Suffolk County Council) Councillor Steve Wiles, Suffolk County Council cabinet member for public protection, said: "The work of Trading Standards in trying to keep us as consumers safe from dangerous and shoddily-made goods cannot be praised highly enough.

"The numbers of items intercepted reflects the need for people to be vigilant about what exactly they are buying, particularly online."

The advice from Suffolk Trading Standards is to look out for dangerous goods that have misleading or poorly spelt labels, have faulty wiring or unclear instructions.

Further safety risks include small magnets and button batteries could be a choking hazard, exploding lithium batteries in unsafe e-bikes and scooters and collapsing telescopic ladders.
