While voter fraud remains a topic of conversation, Wisconsin has multiple safeguards in place to ensure a fair election.
If there's one thing you need to know about voter fraud, it's that it is extremely rare.
Voter fraud became a topic of debate following claims made by then-President Donald Trump in the wake of his 2020 defeat. However, litigation, audits and reports have all reached the same conclusion: There was no widespread fraud in that year's election.
Wisconsin has multiple safeguards in place to ensure a fair election. The voter registration system tracks how many voters are casting a ballot and where, and clerks must ensure that their numbers match those in the system. The state's absentee ballot protocols require signatures from the voter and a witness, and go through a verification process once they arrive at the clerk's offices. In-person absentee ballots are secured with a tamper-evident seal after they're cast and stay sealed until Election Day.
Madison voters will once again be able to use ballot drop boxes this November. Those boxes will have added security cameras and supervision, and dropped-off absentee ballots go through the same process as mailed-in absentee ballots. The City of Madison also holds a public test of its equipment before each election to ensure that ballot tabulation machines work as they're supposed to.
