Nativity scene damaged in Kalamazoo, police investigate

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) -- A Nativity display is back up outside of a Kalamazoo law office after staff said it was damaged over the weekend.

"The best of what we can tell is it was sometime early Saturday morning," said Don Smith, a partner at Willis Law.

The company's Saturday morning Facebook post showed two statues knocked over with parts broken off. The display still has some statues showing signs of the damage.

"There's good and bad with having an office in downtown Kalamazoo," said Smith about issues with outdoor displays at the office.

He said a seated statue of Jesus has had issues before prompting what Smith calls a "Jesus cam," a security camera directly over the display.

He said the team will likely have a "nativity cam" from now on.

Early Sunday, a Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officer was on scene taking photos of the broken statues that have been left up.

An official with the department confirmed that officers are actively investigating the damage. While there are no suspects, police said they are fully committed to pursing all leads.

Smith said the team is determined to keep the display up and improve on it.

"It's frustrating, but God loves everybody, even those guys," Smith said.
