Humane Society aims to alleviate overcrowding as the New Year approaches - WXXV News 25

Coming out of the holiday season, the Humane Society of South Mississippi, like many shelters across Mississippi, is dealing with overcrowding.

From December 31st until January 4th, they are hosting an adoption event with discounted adoption fees of $20, in hopes of helping with the overflow in their shelter.

One adoptee, Anna, adopted not one but two dogs as she felt she needed a new addition to her life as she heads into the new year. By choosing to adopt from a shelter in dire need, Anna has not only provided a loving home for two dogs, but she is also a stepping stone towards alleviating this shelter's issue.

Bianca Janik, director of animal pathways is hopeful that people like Anna will help with the shelter's overcrowding.

Spay and neuter surgeries are a proven way to control the population of unwanted animals, but Mississippi currently lacks statewide mandatory spay/neuter laws. Many animal advocates in that state have called for Mississippi legislators to implement laws that mandate pet owners to spay and neuter their animals.
