'Vamos Vols' creator Carlos Lopez prepares for historic CFP Spanish radio broadcast

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) -- The CFB Playoff game between Tennessee and Ohio State will be a historic event both on and off the field. It will not only mark the first time the Vols will compete in the College Football Playoff, but it will also be one the first CFB Playoff games to feature a radio broadcast in Spanish.

Carlos Lopez and his team of Fuad Reveiz and J.P. Vasquez have burst onto the broadcasting scene recently. The crew conducted the first Spanish-language broadcast in Tennessee Athletics history against UTSA. For Carlos, it started well before that game against the Roadrunners.

Lopez first made a name for himself with TikTok videos in his living room as he did voiceovers of games as they were happening. His audience grew from TikTok to the airwaves. Lopez said his voice has gone international and with it, the expansion of Orange and White nation.

"We just got a message a couple of weeks ago from someone that was living in the Dominican Republic that they had a watch party in Samana Bay in the Dominican Republic," Lopez said. "Not a touristic area, nothing, in the back of a church. They had a watch party for the Vanderbilt game. 100+ Dominicans watching, stream the game and stream the Spanish broadcast. That's what it was about. We have people to reach."

For all three members of the Spanish broadcasting crew, Fuad Reveiz, Lopez and J.P. Vasquez, bringing the College Football Playoff to a Spanish speaking audience is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

"For Fuad and I and JP Vasquez, to be a part of the first 12-team playoff and we're one of two [Spanish broadcasts]," Lopez said. "That's just something in the back of my mind, it's that story that Fuad told at the beginning of the year. 'I remember watching the Dolphin games with my dad, turn the TV down and listen to it in Spanish.' Now we get to bring that to other families."

Out of the 12-team field, only Tennessee and Texas offer a Spanish broadcast. Lopez has been in contact with University of Texas broadcaster Ruben Pizzaro heading into this weekends games. Lopez said Pizzaro was complimentary of how he's built his brand.

"He's been doing it for 30+ years. One of the things he's mentioned to me plenty of times, 'Carlos, you're not just a broadcaster, you're an entertainer," he said. "The way you're on social media, the things you do with crowd and the fan base with multiple sports.' It's something that for me and my team it just goes to show that Vamos Vols is the community."

For those who aren't making the trek to Columbus an want to give Carlos and the crew a listen, you can hear them on AM990 WNML. That version is also available on UTSports.com and the Tennessee Athletics app.
