Check your smoke alarms when you change your clocks, Cleveland Fire says

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - As daylight saving time approaches, Cleveland Fire is reminding residents to check the batteries on their smoke alarms as they change their clocks this weekend.

Sunday, Nov. 3, we will "fall back" for daylight saving time and set clocks back one hour.

"Smoke alarms can save lives, but only working smoke alarms can protect your family," Cleveland Fire said in a press release.

Cleveland Fire Department wants to emphasize the relationship between time and smoke alarms.

Cleveland Fire offered the following tips to make sure your smoke alarms are in the right place and working:

You can check your smoke alarms by pressing the button on the face of the alarm until it makes a sound indicating it is working.

For a smoke alarm out of reach, try using a broomstick or ask a family member, neighbor or friend for assistance.

If your smoke alarm does not make a sound or is over 10 years old, Cleveland Fire recommends replacing it.

Smoke alarms should be on every floor of the house, including the basement and anywhere people sleep.

In need of smoke alarms?

Cleveland Fire had partnered with the American Red Cross for Operation Save a Life providing free smoke alarms with 10-year lithium batteries installed by Cleveland Fire.

Cleveland residents can call 216-361-5535 for more information and to sign up for smoke alarms.
