Small Business Saturday: Highlights local shops and community - WWAYTV3

DOWNTOWN WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- If Black Friday isn't for you, Small Business Saturday offered an alternative this weekend, as local businesses around the Cape Fear region welcomed shoppers for sales.

Small Business Saturday, which began in 2010 as an initiative by American Express, has grown into a national tradition encouraging consumers to shop locally and support the small businesses that make our communities unique.

Wilmington businesses took part in the event, offering a variety of products and experiences for all.

We visited downtown to check out the local shopping scene, where business owners mentioned that the pace was steady and shared how much community support means to them.

Shopping small not only helps local entrepreneurs stay open but also supports the local economy.

Sam Balzano, owner of Hues of Violet, shared her perspective on the value of shopping locally: "Your tax dollars are going to stay in your community and move towards all of the goals that we want, like creating a better Wilmington. I think people don't realize how many options there are in Wilmington and how many affordable options there are. All over the place, you can find a shop, exactly what you're looking for, and find a really unique piece for a great price!"

Hues of Violet, a women's boutique on Front Street in downtown Wilmington, is extending their Small Business Saturday deals through Monday. And for those unable to visit in person, Balzano adds that they offer free local shipping.
