Residents of Yazoo City are picking up the pieces after weekend flash flooding left extensive damage to homes and property. Magnolia Thomas' home on Short Jackson Street was surrounded by water on Saturday, trapping her inside for hours, and destroying everything. "I have four TVs, all that. And the bed. The floor is popping up. I've been mopping and I got the majority of the water, but the floor is popping up and so there ain't nothing I can save," Thomas said. "The whole house was just full of water and I couldn't even get out of my own house."After the water receded, a line showed just how high the floodwater was outside her home. Her neighbors are facing similar challenges, removing soaked mattresses and furniture from their homes. Jekel Williams, another resident, said, "You know that we did get flooded out. A lot of water still on the back," said Jekel Williams, another resident. The flooding affected numerous homes and vehicles, with about two dozen homes reporting water inside. Yazoo County Emergency Management Director Jack Willingham explained that the intense flash flooding overwhelmed the drainage system, catching everyone off guard."I think the front actually stalled over town so you had a large amount of rain in just a short period of time," Willingham said. "If you've ever filled up a glass, and even if it has a drain at the bottom, it's only going to hold so much before it overflows." Thomas, who does not have flood insurance, will need additional help to replace everything she lost inside her home. The Yazoo County Emergency Management Agency has requested a local emergency declaration, which is the first step toward obtaining federal assistance for those affected by the flooding.
