Iowa football: Hawkeyes improve to 7-4 after victory at Maryland

The Iowa football team rushed for 268 yards Saturday in a 29-13 victory over Maryland at SECU Stadium in College Park, Md.

Kaleb Johnson led Iowa with 164 yards on 35 carries. Kamari Moulton finished with 114 yards on 12 attempts.

The Hawkeyes improved to 7-4 overall and 5-3 in the Big Ten Conference. Maryland fell to 4-7 and 1-7. Iowa is now 20-3 in November since the start of 2019, the third-best mark in the nation according to the Big Ten Network.

Drew Stevens tied a school record with five field goals. He accounted for 17 of Iowa's 29 points.

Walk-on quarterback Jackson Stratton did everything the Hawkeyes needed to win - 10 completions in 14 attempts for 76 yards. The most important statistic of the day for him, though, was having zero turnovers.

Iowa led 16-0 early in the third quarter. After Maryland cut the deficit to 19-13 early in the fourth quarter, Moulton put Iowa back in control with a 68-yard touchdown run thanks to a huge hole created by the Hawkeye offensive line.

Iowa then iced the game with a pair of interceptions - the first by TJ Hall and the second by Jay Higgins.

Iowa got on the board first with a 27-yard field goal by Stevens with 22 seconds left in the first quarter. The kick capped a 13-play, 59-yard drive that ate up 6:20 of clock.

Johnson put the Hawkeyes ahead 10-0 with a 2-yard touchdown run with 6:29 left in the second quarter. It was Johnson's 21st rushing touchdown of the season, surpassing Shonn Greene's Hawkeye record.

Johnson's TD finished off a 14-play, 77-yard drive that lasted 7:26. The Hawkeyes dominated the ball in the first half, with 22:52 of possession time (Maryland had 7:08).

Stevens blasted a 54-yard field goal with a strong wind at his back to give Iowa a 13-0 lead with a minute left in the first half. The ball was seemingly still rising when it crashed into the net behind the goalpost.

Iowa had 200 yards in the first half, while Maryland was held to 65. The Hawkeyes had 15 first downs, the Terrapins just three. Johnson had 109 yards on 22 carries before halftime. Stratton was 7-of-10 passing for 61 yards.

Iowa's halftime lead could have been more, but its first drive ended at the Maryland 10-yard line when a Moulton fumble was recovered by the Terrapins.
