People who relied on Salvation Army struggle after temporary closure

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WBNG) -- On May 13, a fatal stabbing took place at the Wagon Train Warriors' weekly Tuesday night dinner held at the Salvation Army.

City of Binghamton Mayor Jared Kraham decided it was best for the community to have the business switch locations. This has caused other soup Kitchens and pantries in the area to see an increase in the number of people in need of food.

"Where we mostly see people coming is the morning because they are not finding the breakfast meal or the bread available," Senior Pastor at Binghamton United Presbyterian Church Kimberly Chastain said.

Manager of Outreach Ministries Brian Donnelly told 12 News that anytime a pantry or kitchen is closed, the others feel the impact.

"It's always a matter of how much food we have available," Donnelly said.

Although the Salvation Army is looking for a new home, the Wagon Train Warriors said they will not stop feeding the community.

"Are people still need to be fed, they need to be clothed and they need to know that somebody still cares about them," Co-Founder Robin Carter said.

The group is waiting to meet with the Mayor to find a new location. 12 News reached out to Mayor Kraham regarding the situation but has not yet received a response.

For now, the Wagon Train Warriors will give sandwiches on Washington Street on Mondays.
