Sections of Marvin Park vandalized

OWEGO, N.Y. (WBNG) -- Marvin Park in Owego was left vandalized over the weekend.

Tioga County Fair Board President Eric Johnson said the damages to the property included a break-in to the recently built announcer's stand, a tear-down of a section of a chain-link fence, broken tables and lights at the firehouse pavilion, and a message stating, " Sorry we broke your door; we were bored."

"We put a lot of hours, sweat, and equity as a fair board and our money into village-owned properties," Johnson said. "To make it a nice usable property for village residents."

The announcer's stand is not covered by insurance, and Johnson says the Tioga County Agricultural Society will need to pay out of pocket to fix the damages.

Village of Owego Mayor Mike Baratta said village police are reviewing surveillance footage to find those responsible.

"Not ever good to see something, especially something that people work so hard to improve," Baratta said. "The groups that had damage were groups that are made of volunteers and fundraisers and whatnot to get their projects done, so it's disheartening for sure."

The security cameras on the announcer's stand were not in operation during the break-in. Johnson says he is working on ways to prevent incidents like these in the future.

"We have 16 cameras placed around the facility, and we are stepping up," Johnson said. "We are working with the village to get more patrols to patrol the park."

Johnson said these damages will not impact operations at this year's Tioga County fair, which will take place Aug. 5 to 9 and will include a new rodeo.

Baratta encourages anyone with information on this vandalism to contact the Owego Police Department.
