Preview: Shakopee-Prior Lake Shockwaves water ski club turns 50

It all started in 1957, with one Prior Lake man's dream to construct a water-ski jump.

Fifty years later, at the age of 75, Jim Petersen's passion for water skiing is still prevalent.

His passion for the sport, coupled with the high cost of building and maintaining a ski jump was the driving force that led to the formation of the Prior Lake Water Ski Association, which is now known as Shockwaves.

What began 50 years ago with a handful of water skiers has turned into one of Minnesota's largest water-ski clubs, boasting nearly 200 members.

The club has a large number of water skiers who participate in the three traditional water skiing disciplines of slalom, jump and trick skiing at state, regional and national water-skiing competitions.
