BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A 20-year-old man is hospitalized after a high-speed police chase in Bloomington ended in a crash Thursday night.
On Nov. 21, Indiana State Police said a trooper tried to conduct a traffic stop on Interstate 69 for an expired license plate on a 2010 Lexus.
After the trooper activated his emergency lights, police said the driver, a 20-year-old man from Portage, Indiana, sped off, exceeding 100 miles per hour.
As the Lexus headed northbound, the driver allegedly lost control and drove off the east side of the road. ISP said his vehicle struck a guardrail, moved down the right shoulder and became airborne. The Lexus then stopped at an embankment 150 feet from the road, police said.
(NOTE: 13News does not name suspects in cases until formal charges are filed by prosecutors).
The trooper called for fire and EMS, who then helped extricate the driver. While the trooper was helping with the extrication, he allegedly smelled a "strong odor" of alcohol coming from the driver. The trooper then started an investigation into the operation of a vehicle while intoxicated.
The driver was taken to Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital. The extent of his injuries is unknown at this time.
