Saenz: Fiber Optics And Transparency - A Need For Los Alamos (Part 3)

Last Tuesday, two significant items on the County Council's agenda caught the community's attention: the Community Broadband Project and the proposed purchase of properties on Diamond Drive. While both seemed ready for rubber-stamp approval, the community showed up -- both in person and online -- to have their voices heard. The result was a mix of progress and constructive delay.

Fiber Optics: A Step Forward

After a detailed presentation and public input, the Council unanimously approved the broadband contracts, marking a major step forward for connectivity in Los Alamos. Attendees highlighted LANet's 27 years of investment and urged collaboration with local providers to cut costs, utilize existing resources, and protect local businesses.

This project promises a brighter future for Los Alamos. Bringing fiber-to-the-home will boost connectivity, support residents and businesses, and drive long-term growth. I'm optimistic and eager to help reduce costs and accelerate its success.

Diamond Drive Purchase: A Pause for Transparency

Public feedback on the proposed $9.8 million land purchase was overwhelmingly critical. Concerns included the high price, lack of transparency, unclear development plans, and potential harm to existing businesses. Residents expressed frustration over the short notice and the perceived disregard for community input.

It was a success that the Council chose to delay the decision until Dec. 3, allowing more time for public discussion. This postponement signals a willingness to address the community's concerns, though much work remains to be done.

Looking Ahead: Public Forum on the Diamond Drive Properties

To further address community concerns about the Diamond Drive purchase, the newly formed Los Alamos Local Business Coalition will host a hybrid public forum on Dec. 2 at 5:30 p.m. at SALA Los Alamos Event Center.

This forum aims to provide residents and local businesses with a clearer understanding of the proposal, encourage open dialogue, and collaboratively develop recommendations to share with the County Council. Participants can join in person or via Zoom.
