Avalyn's journey: facing brain surgery with courage and a dream to help others

NORTHSTATE, Calif. -- For Avalyn, life took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with a serious brain tumor at just 10 years old. The tumor which is dangerously close to her brain stem, has grown over time and now affects critical areas of her brain. As the holidays approach, Avalyn is preparing for a series of three life-altering surgeries in December aimed at removing or shrinking the tumor.

"It's definitely difficult in every way," her mother Tiffany shared. "The support we have gotten is amazing... It's hard."

Her journey has not been easy. The tumor has impacted Avalyn's hearing and ability to concentrate, adding new challenges to her daily life. "All my teachers know, so they put me in the front near the desk and stuff so I can hear them. It's not as easy because I zone out a lot," she explained.

Chemotherapy has also taken a toll on her energy and focus, but Avalyn remains determined. "It's definitely difficult to pay attention," she said.

Amid the challenges, Avalyn has found inspiration in the care and kindness of a child health specialist who supported her after her first surgery. This specialist brought her comfort through small gestures, like gifting her squishies -- little toys Avalyn still treasures today.

"When I grow up, I want to be that person who can come in and give kids the opportunity to have somebody there, you know," Avalyn said, smiling as she spoke about her dream to help other children facing medical challenges.

The family has made countless road trips to San Francisco's UCSF Medical Center for treatment. Last year, Avalyn found moments of joy exploring the city, visiting the beach, and going out to dinner. This year, she's set her sights on a bucket list item: visiting Alcatraz.

With mounting medical bills and travel expenses, Avalyn's family has turned to the community for support. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help cover the medical costs and travel expenses.

"Hopefully after the surgeries, it will just be smooth, and we'll be able to come home," Avalyn said, holding onto hope for a brighter future.

Avalyn's courage and determination remind us all of the strength and resilience it takes to face life's hardest challenges. Her story is a testament to the power of community, care and hope.
