Harrison County Sheriff's Office warns of phone scam

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WBOY) -- The Harrison County Sheriff's Office is making the public aware of a phone scam going around.

According to a Facebook post from the office, scammers are telling those who answer the call that they are Lt. Petroski from the Sheriff's Office, there is a warrant out for your arrest and that if you don't send money you will be arrested.

"They are scamming people out of thousands of dollars," the office wrote. " You can tell them you are calling the local authorities and hopefully that will deter them from calling you back. Again, do NOT give them any money."

This kind of scam is not new to the area, as the Harrison County Sheriff's Office saw a similar scam in the community earlier this year.

If you receive a call that seems suspicious, follow these steps:

If you think you have fallen victim to a scam, you can contact the West Virginia Attorney General's Consumer Hotline for assistance at 1-800-365-8808 or file a complaint online here.
