Canada Post workers are set to strike as early as Friday, May 23.
The company received a strike notice from the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) for both urban and rural bargaining units on Monday, May 19.
Strike activity is expected to begin at 12 a.m. on Friday, May 23. Operations are to continue as usual, but customers should expect possible service delays.
Socio-economic cheques for the month of May will be delivered prior to the possibility of any strike activity, and both CUPW and Canada Post have agreed to continue delivering the cheques during any upcoming labour disruption.
According to a recent report by The Industrial Inquiry Commission, Canada Post is facing an "existential crisis and is effectively insolvent, or bankrupt." The Industrial Inquiry Commission recommends the company phase out daily door-to-door delivery for individual homes.
Since 2018, Canada Post has recorded more than $3 billion in losses before tax and will post another significant loss for 2024.
