Bilingual school's theater program stages performances in both English and Spanish

Adelante Charter School will present its annual musical performance "Willy Wonka Kids," adapted for the stage by Leslie Bricusse and Timothy A. McDonald, 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 22 in the Franklin Elementary School cafeteria. (Doors open at 5 p.m.)

Directed by Adelante educators Sandra Limon, Lauren Macioce, and Amber O'Rourke, "the musical reflects the school's unique and vibrant approach to the performing arts," the school said.

As the only fully bilingual theater program in the Santa Barbara Unified School District, Adelante's productions celebrate language, culture and creativity.

"The collaboration between music, dance, and art educators creates a rich, multidisciplinary experience that resonates with students and audiences alike," the school said.

Adelante's bilingual theater began in the 2018-19 school year with "Martina y Pérez." Since then, the school has staged "The Wizard of Oz," "Aladdin" and "The Lion King."

Each show is performed in both English and Spanish, using language that mirrors the daily experiences of students and families in the community.

The annual musical invites students in grades three-six to audition and participate, providing them a opportunity to build confidence, explore self-expression, and cultivate teamwork.

Participation has more than doubled since the program's inception, growing from 25 students in its first year to more than 65 for the most recent production.

In addition to performers, Adelante offers a backstage crew program, allowing students to manage props, sets, and stage transitions, ensuring a meaningful role for every student interested in theater.

"For me, being in the musical is the best part of the school year," said fifth-grader Theo H, who plays Abuelo Joe. "I love learning the dances and songs with my friends. It makes me feel proud to perform in both Spanish and English in front of my family."

"Our program isn't just about performance, it's about building a sense of belonging and pride," says director Sandra Limon. "We see students grow not only as artists but as leaders and collaborators."

The Adelante musical has become a highlight of the school year, drawing audiences from across the Santa Barbara community. Many former participants have continued their theater journeys in junior high and high school productions, the school said.

Adelante Charter School is a public, dual-language immersion elementary school in Santa Barbara and was recently recognized as a 2025 California Distinguished School. Adelante empowers students to thrive academically and socially in both English and Spanish.
