State troopers arrested two people on Sunday and Monday following pursuits in west-central Nebraska.

Around 12:40 a.m. Sunday MT, troopers were notified that the Ogallala police were in pursuit of a Toyota sedan, westbound on U.S. Highway 30. A trooper joined as the vehicle exited Ogallala westbound, NSP spokesman Cody Thomas said. The vehicle reached speeds over 130 mph until it reached Big Springs, where it turned south on U.S. Highway 138 and headed east on I-80.

As the pursuit continued, a Keith County deputy was able to deploy stop sticks to slow the vehicle, but the driver continued, exiting I-80 at mile marker 133 where it drove off the road and came to a stop in the ditch.

Thomas said the driver then fled on foot but was quickly apprehended.

Christoper Mitchell, 26, of Sarasota, Fla. was arrested and charged with flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, obstructing a peace officer, resisting arrest, criminal mischief, and traffic violations. Mitchell was taken to the Keith County jail.

Thomas said the Ogallala police was the lead investigating agency.

Thedford

And around 2 p.m. CT on Monday, a trooper saw a Ford Edge driving west at more than 100 mph on NE Highway 2 near Dunning. The trooper tried to pull it over, but the driver refused to yield and accelerated with the trooper in pursuit.

As the vehicle approached Thedford, another trooper successfully deployed stop sticks to slow it down. The driver pulled over and came to a stop. Troopers took the driver into custody without further incident.

The driver, Jeffrey Zitek, 58, of Grand Island, was taken into custody without further trouble, Thomas said. Zitek is charged with willful reckless driving, flight to avoid arrest, and traffic violations. He was placed in Custer County Jail.
