(BCN) -- A 68-year-old man was struck and killed Monday night by a man driving a small pickup truck in Hayward.
Police said the man was hit a little before 10 p.m. near Jackson and Santa Clara streets as he was walking outside of the marked intersection and that the driver initially stopped, then fled the area but left the vehicle's license plate behind.
The driver, a 55-year-old man whose name wasn't released, was found in the area a short time later.
He gave officers a statement about the collision and was released. Investigators are still trying to determine if alcohol was a factor in the crash, according to police.
The victim, whose name wasn't immediately available, was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
It was Hayward's eighth fatal collision of 2024.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Hayward Police Department's Traffic Bureau at (510) 293-7011.
