Mental Health Provider Suggests Ways to Deal with Fire Trauma in Children - MyNewsLA.com

A Los Angeles County mental health services provider said Friday that the devastating series of wildfires can leave children feeling scared, anxious and uncertain.

"Children often take emotional cues from adults, and your well-being is key to helping them cope," according to Charlene Dimas-Peinado, president and CEO of Wellnest. "Lean on community resources, friends, and loved ones for support during this challenging time."

Wellnest has suggested several ways to support children through the disaster:

-- Open communication: Encourage children to share their feelings and fears, listen with empathy and validate their emotions, letting them know it's OK to feel scared or sad;

-- Provide reassurance: Remind children that they are safe and loved, and try to create routines to restore a sense of normalcy and stability in their daily lives;

-- Limit exposure to distressing news: While it's important to stay informed, too much exposure to news about the fires can heighten anxiety. Instead, focus on positive stories of recovery and resilience;

-- Practice stress-reduction techniques: Engage children in activities that promote relaxation, such as deep breathing exercises, mindfulness, drawing or playing games; and

-- Seek professional help when needed: If a child is showing prolonged signs of distress, such as trouble sleeping, extreme fear or withdrawal from loved ones, consider reaching out to a mental health professional for support.
