After playing sparingly on Wednesday, Toronto Raptors coach Darko Rajaković said rookie Jamal Shead was a healthy scratch in the second half against the Philadelphia 76ers.
Shead started for the short-handed Raptors, who were without several players, including Scottie Barnes (hand), RJ Barrett (personal), Gradey Dick (knee), Immanuel Quickly (rest) and Ja'Kobe Walter (hip). He had five points and five assists in 12 first-half minutes, finishing a team-high plus-17 on the court.
But, the 45th pick wasn't on the court to begin the second half, prompting many to question if his absence was injury related. Rajaković said the benching was simply a coaching decision.
"I wanted to see AJ (Lawson) and Jared (Rhoden) at point guard and give more opportunities for them to see how they handled the point guard position," Rajaković said.
Lawson produced a team-high 28 points and six rebounds, Rhoden registered a career-high 25 points, 12 rebounds and five assists and Orlando Robinson added a career-high 25 points, 12 rebounds and six assists to lead the Raptors to their fifth win in six games.
Shead had logged extended playing time and emerged as a key player for Rajaković of late, with the team dealing with a lengthy injury report. He hadn't logged 12 minutes or fewer in a game since a loss against the Chicago Bulls on Dec. 16, a span of 35 games.
The 22-year-old is averaging 6.2 points, 3.7 assists and 1.3 rebounds on 41.8% shooting from the field in 60 appearances this season with the Raptors. He has scored in double figures 12 times, including a career-high 16 points, nine assists and three rebounds on Feb. 4.
