The New York Giants made a surprising move on Friday, releasing their former first-round pick, quarterback Daniel Jones. This reportedly came at the request of Jones, who was benched this week in favor of Tommy DeVito.
The Giants will be moving in a new direction and Jones will be looking for a new home. Because of his contract, the expectation is that Jones will clear waivers and be free to sign with a new team on Monday.
"Jim Harbaugh should see a little bit of J.J. McCarthy in Jones and should want to upgrade the backup situation behind Justin Herbert, which is very shaky with Taylor Heinicke and Easton Stick, two pending free agents. Jones just feels like a QB who could please either Harbaugh."
Sure, Jones would give the Chargers an upgrade at the No. 2 QB spot, but why would Jones want out of New York to go be a backup somewhere else? The Chargers don't have a shaky starting quarterback, Justin Herbert is going to be the guy for a long time.
Instead, Jones is likely to be looking for a place where he can go and quickly change the perception of what people saw from him with the Giants. A team in dire need of a future prospect is much more likely to sign Jones. Here's a list of places that make sense:
New Orleans Saints
Dallas Cowboys
New York Jets
Tennessee Titans
Las Vegas Raiders
Cleveland Browns
Free to sign wherever he'd like, I would expect Jones to sign with one of those teams or a team where there is a path to be a starter, before the Chargers.
