Federal and local officials partner to teach LAUSD students cyber safety

Federal and local officials have joined forces to help Los Angeles Unified School District students, parents and staff learn how to stay safe online.

The partnership, involving the U.S. Attorney's Office, LAUSD and the Department of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), will provide age-appropriate training on cyber safety, focusing on protecting children from online sexual exploitation.

The program is part of HSI's Project iGuardian, a national initiative aimed at combating the rising threat of child sexual exploitation.

"Nothing is more important than protecting and uplifting our children," said U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada. "We are proud to team up with LAUSD and HSI to expand on that work so that we can educate more young people about the dangers posed by the internet and social media."

The formal agreement will provide tailored presentations for preteens, teenagers, younger children, staff and parents, officials said.

Special agents will visit schools to teach kids how to avoid online threats and what to do if they encounter something dangerous.

"This partnership with LAUSD and DOJ is taking a proactive approach to educating students and trusted adults about the dangers our children face online," said Eddy Wang, HSI's Los Angeles Special Agent in Charge.

LAUSD is the second-largest school district in the nation and serves more than 600,000 students.

Alfonzo Webb, LAUSD's senior director of Climate Culture, said the district is committed to keeping students safe. "By working together, we will provide age-appropriate presentations, resources, and guidance to help foster safer online environments for students," Webb said.

This effort is part of Project Safe Childhood, a national program started by the Department of Justice to fight child exploitation and abuse. For more information, click here.
