DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) -- The Decatur Police Department says a man has been arrested following an investigation into the increased package thefts throughout the city in December.

According to DPD, on Dec. 20, the department received numerous reports of a man stealing packages in Weatherly Cir. SW. DPD said officers conducted more patrols in the neighborhoods and got video footage when available.

Authorities said officers responded to the area and found the suspect's vehicle. After a short foot chase, officers said they took the suspect in custody, which was linked to the package theft crimes.

DPD recovered the packages and mail of about 40 different victims during the arrest.

A DPD spokesperson said officers have reached out and made contact with everyone who was impacted by the package thefts.

DPD said more information about the arrest will be released as it becomes available.
