One dead in deputy-involved shooting in Greenville County

GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) - One person is dead in Greenville County after a reported deputy-involved shooting.

According to Greenville County Sheriff's Office, at around 2:15 a.m. Saturday, Greenville County Communications received a 911 call about a person making threats to hurt others at Kmart Plaza in Greenville County.

The sheriff's office said a deputy responded to the scene and a "verbal altercation" occurred with a suspect who has not yet been identified. During the argument, the suspect reportedly presented a weapon and the deputy shot them.

The suspect was taken to the hospital for treatment but was later pronounced dead.

Standard with Sheriff's Office protocol SLED was requested to investigate and the deputies involved will be placed on paid administrative leave.

The Sheriff's Office will release a critical incident community briefing video of the incident on January 7.
