ATLANTA -- As many prepare to spend holiday time with family and friends, there are thousands of children across metro Atlanta dealing with the emotional and financial strain of having a parent behind bars.
That's where kind souls like Chimise Awoyinka come in.
She's a local Uber driver who uses her earnings to create care packages and gifts for the children of incarcerated parents and their caregivers. The care packages include washcloths, tissue packets, toothbrushes and other items.
For Chimise, this mission is deeply personal. She's been the primary caregiver to her nephew after her sister was incarcerated. She saw first-hand the hardship and emotional toll that comes with growing up without a parent and saw how it affected her nephew's life. This insight drove her to take action through the nonprofit Prison Fellowship Support Group, which is dedicated to helping families impacted by incarceration.
"Our goals as we parent is to teach them to be a difference in someone's life and give back as much as you possibly can," she told 11Alive. "The more you give, the more God gives."
Chimise, her nephew and volunteers helped assemble the care packages and wrap presents to help deliver hope to children across metro Atlanta.
