The American Red Cross is helping dozens of people displaced in an apartment fire that destroyed several units on Brixworth Court in Windsor Mill on Tuesday.
Contractors spent the day trying to shore up the apartments -- two three-story apartments were damaged because of the fire. Baltimore County Fire said its investigators can't go in until the property is safe.
In the daylight, the damage is clear. Workers showed up Wednesday to clean up debris and board up windows.
SkyTeam 11 video showed flames shooting through the roof, causing the roof to collapse.
"We still don't know the reason for the fire," said Kitrease Johnson, who lives nearby. "Nobody is disclosing it. The police say they couldn't tell what going on, what had happened. Also called the rental office and they wouldn't tell either."
11 News was told the property manager was off-site. Johnson said her daughter's friend lives in one of the buildings impacted by the fire.
"The thing is she was out walking her dog when it went up in flames," Johnson said. "When they came back around, it was in flames."
While there is a lot of damage, no one was hurt. Johnson's daughter's friend is among those being helped by the Red Cross.
"Right now, we are assisting 11 households -- a total of 27 people that includes two children. Twenty-four apartments are impacted by the fire," said Bethany Bray Patterson with the Red Cross.
The Red Cross is working with the Baltimore County Health and Human Services Department to see if more people need help.
"We offer financial assistance to help people get back on their feet," Patterson said. "We also provide mental health support and help replacing medications, medical items lost in the fire, things like glasses or a mobility aid -- things like that."
