CHAMPAIGN -- Good news for local department-store shoppers: the Macy's at the Market Place mall isn't on a list of closures announced by the chain Thursday.

However, the store's future remains uncertain, as more locations are expected to close.

Macy's Inc. said that the 66 announced closures are part of its "Bold New Chapter strategy," which was originally announced in February. The store said at the time that about 150 locations would be closed through 2026.

"This plan is designed to return the company to sustainable, profitable sales growth, which includes closing approximately 150 underproductive stores over a three-year period while investing in its 350 go-forward Macy's locations through fiscal (year) 2026," the company said in its latest announcement.

The sole Illinois store on the closure list is at White Oaks Mall in Springfield. Certain stores were marked as closed during fiscal year 2024, expected to close in the middle of fiscal year 2025, or slated to have a closure sale "in Q1 2025."

The company wrote that the "majority of locations" are expected to close in the first quarter of 2025 but did not specify whether it was referring to the calendar or fiscal year.

"Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy's stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go-forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service," said Chairman and CEO Tony Spring.

Kohl's also announced a slew of closures on Thursday, stating that 27 "underperforming" stores will shut down by April.

The list includes two Illinois locations in Plainfield and West Dundee.
