First child flu death reported in Arizona for the new year

PINAL COUNTY, AZ (AZFamily) -- Public health officials say a young child has died from the flu, marking the first pediatric flu death in Arizona this year.

Officials confirmed the death was reported in Pinal County, but a specific city or town wasn't released.

"Our deepest sympathy goes out to this child's family. In order to protect their privacy, we will not be releasing any further information about the child," said Merissa Mendoza, Health Director for the Pinal County Public Health Services District.

Officials say since the start of the flu season, nearly 2,800 flu cases have been reported in Pinal County alone. Over 30,000 cases have been reported across Arizona.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that children six months and older receive the flu vaccine. Health experts advise getting the vaccine as soon as possible because it takes your immune system two weeks to build defense against the virus.

Those with the flu often feel some or all of the following symptoms:

People experiencing these symptoms are urged to contact their doctor to receive medications.

If you would like to schedule a flu shot or other immunizations, call Pinal County Public Health at 1-866-960-0633 or go to vaccines.gov to find your nearest vaccine provider location.
