Two residents take on fundraiser supporting police chief battling cancer; asking for help

With the full support of the Melvindale Police Department, two residents are taking the lead and joining efforts to launch a fundraiser in appreciation and concern for the police chief.

Chief Robert Kennaley is battling cancer and, according to the department, has temporarily stepped away from his duties.

The residents, Carol Williams and Karen Frederick, are coordinating the event, which will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. on April 26.

It is set to take place at the Melvindale Civic Arena, 4300 South Dearborn Street.

Williams explained their reasoning behind taking charge on behalf of Kennaley.

"We love our chief," she said. "He is a great guy and I feel like this is the best thing we can do for him right now. We just want to raise a little money for doctor appointments or other little expenses."

Williams lost her husband to cancer 16 years ago and Frederick lost her husband to cancer as well.

Frederick said this is a gesture for Kennaley, his wife, Lorie, and the entire police department.

Although they are committed to their plan, Frederick said they are hoping to get some assistance from Melvindale residents, as well as others from Downriver police departments and communities.

"We need help," Frederick said. "We need bodies. Restaurants and residents can email us and offer donations of food and baskets. The food doesn't have to be spaghetti. It can be chicken, pizza, or halal -- food that's permissible under Islamic law. We want to be inclusive,"

The two organizers are looking for a wide range of donations, including paper plants, drinks, cups, and for restaurants to contribute dishes as well, including large pans of salad.

Residents and restaurants have been receptive to their requests to pitch in and help thus far, but they believe for the crowd they hope to draw they need more help.

Both are counting on people coming together for the sake of someone they said has spent years putting his life on the line for others.

A GoFundMe account has also been put in place for Kennaley.

That fundraiser is being organized by Mohamed Hacham, a fellow police officer.

"I am reaching out to you all to support our beloved police chief, Robert Kennaly, of the Melvindale Police Department," Hacham said. Chief Kennaley is not only a dedicated leader to his officers but also a mentor, a brother, and a true role model. He has always been there for his department and his community, putting others before himself. Now, it's our turn to be there for him."

In a message posted on its social media page, members of the police department are asking their followers to participate in the fundraiser.

Tickets are $20 for adults; $10 for children.

The cost includes spaghetti, sides, breads, and soft drinks.

Those attending will also have a chance to win a 50/50 raffle and baskets.

The hours were made long enough so officers on all shifts can be able to attend.

Anyone with questions about donating can contact Williams via email at Carolexcoop179@gmailccom.

Frederick can be reached at [email protected].
