HENRIETTA, N.Y. (WROC) -- Congratulations to Lindsay Titus, our latest Golden Apple Award winner.
Titus teaches Special Education at Winslow Elementary in the Rush-Henrietta School District. School Principal Jennifer Tomalty says, "she really connects with her kids and understands them on a deep level. She also has a really good sense of where they need to go as learners, and she works hard to make sure their learning is customized and that it helps them to be successful."
Mrs. Titus was nominated for a Golden Apple Award by a colleague who see how hard she works in the classroom each day. "The individual lesson plans that she has for each student, it's fantastic because she wants each student to be the best they can be," says Lou Ann Black.
Tomalty adds, "this is a tremendously wonderful recognition for the care and dedication that she puts into her work every day. She really does an amazing job with our kids, and we are delighted to have her as part of our Winslow community."
This is Titus' 19th year working in education. She has been a special education teacher, a behavioral specialist, and even worked as an administrator before deciding to return to the classroom this year. "I love how individual they all get to be. They all have their strengths, and we get to build on those strengths every day and getting to create opportunities so they can feel good about who they are and confident in who they are, it's just so exciting to come to school every day," says Titus.
She decided to become a teacher because of a wonderful teacher she once had.
"For me it was really my second-grade teacher. We had just moved from Canada to Buffalo and she made me feel so welcome in a brand-new state and brand-new area and that has always been my goal is to make kids feel welcome, comfortable, and as happy as they can be being themselves when they come to school each day," says Titus.
Judging by the smiles in her classroom she's achieved that goal. It's also re-assurance that her hard work and dedication is paying off.
"Seeing them overcome their challenges. When they get that "aha" moment and something finally clicks and that smile beams on their face and they celebrate each other and cheer each other on, there is nothing better.," says Titus.
