Lafayette man arrested in fatal hit-and-run after bicyclist killed on Pinhook Road

One man is dead and another has been arrested as the result of a hit-and-run incident that occurred just after midnight Sunday in the 1600 block of West Pinhook Road.

Lafayette police say about 12:18 a.m. Sunday an SUV traveling eastbound in the inside lane struck a bicyclist who was operating a bicycle with an attached utility basket. Following the collision, the driver of the SUV fled the scene, police said.

The driver, 54-year-old Darrel P. Whittington was located in the 100 block of Rue Beauregard, according to police. The bicyclist, identified as 49-year-old Derrick Shane Miller, was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Whittington, who police say was suspected of impairment, was arrested and booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on charges of felony hit and run, vehicular homicide, second offense operating while intoxicated and self-mutilation by a prisoner

The Lafayette Police Department Traffic Division is continuing to investigate this incident.
