Founded in 1958, College of the Desert is a two-year community college serving the Coachella Valley. Here's more fun facts about COD.
The search for the next permanent president/superintendent at College of the Desert has been canceled, after a reported breach of confidentiality by "one or more members of the presidential search committee has compromised the fairness and trust that are fundamental to this process," the college's spokesperson said in a statement.
The search committee includes 19 voting members, all of whom signed confidentiality agreements. The board of trustees approved the committee's structure at the Aug. 16 meeting. However, due to the confidential nature of the search process, only the structure was shared.
As chair of the board and the committee, Bonnie Stefan made the decision to cancel the current search and informed the remaining members of each group. AGB Search, the headhunting firm scheduled to interview semifinalist candidates next week on Dec. 16 and Dec. 17, has notified the selected applicants that the interviews have been canceled.
"This decision reflects College of the Desert's unwavering commitment to upholding the principles of transparency, equity and trust, which are critical in the selection of the next leader," the college's statement said.
COD's spokesperson said he could not speculate what would happen next because the decision is up to the board whether they want to retain the current search firm or start the process over.
Following the general election results, Stefan and Bea Gonzalez's terms will officially end this Friday. Mark Meyer and Mary Jane Sanchez will be sworn in at the board meeting on Friday, Dec. 20. It remains uncertain whether the board will address next steps then or at a future meeting.
