The Prior Lake Legion squad wrapped up the regular season with its sixth consecutive victory July 17, topping Hutchinson 5-2.
With the win, the Lakers secured the first league title in recent memory with a mark of 13-0, finishing 18-3 overall during the regular season.
"We accomplished one of our goals for the season by winning the league, and I couldn't be more proud of these guys," said head coach Bill Reed. "Our next step is to go and compete in this weekend's tourney (at Plato/Hutchinson) and fine-tune the little things that will help us in the playoffs."
The Lakers took a 1-0 lead on Hutchinson in the first inning when Pat McDonald delivered a double that brought in Jim Schroeder, who had reached on an error and stole second base.
Hutchinson answered with a pair of runs in the second inning, however, to claim a 2-1 advantage.
The Lakers pulled even in the third, though, getting an RBI-single from Jake Pieper that brought in McDonald, who had singled and moved up on an error.
Prior Lake won it with three more runs in the fourth, a two-run single by Schroeder serving as the big blow.
The Lakers also got three hits from Tyler Hoyt and two more from Jake Berens.
Ben Wartman started on the mound for Prior Lake and gave up both Hutchinson runs in three innings of work. Karl Pold (two innings), J.P. Fonder (one inning) and Monin Ouk (one inning) combined to shut the door over the final four frames.
"Monin Ouk was project at the start of the season and has really come a long way as a closer," Reed said. "He has a very deceptive delivery from the left side that we have worked on and tweaked this season, and he has really added a lot of movement on his pitches that has batters off balance."
A day earlier, the Lakers swept a double-header at Shakopee, winning 9-1 and 4-3.
Matt Branson picked up the complete-game win in the first game, allowing just one run on six hits in seven innings of work.
"He was very smart with his pitches and worked ahead most of the night, getting them to chase his pitches," Reed said. "We backed him up with some very solid defense."
McDonald, meanwhile, supplied much of the offense, going 2-for-4 with two runs batted in.
Prior Lake also got two hits apiece from Schroeder and Wartman, who both scored twice and drove in a run, as well.
Other Laker hits belonged to Mason Holmquist, who also walked twice and scored twice, Jared Wasik, who also walked, scored, stole a base and drove in a run, Alex Flaschenriem and Jeff Butler.
In the nightcap, it was McDonald picking up a complete-game victory on the mound for Prior Lake, allowing three runs on nine hits while striking out eight.
