DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) -- Decatur Public Schools is investigating after an "altercation" took place between students and parents at a graduation ceremony over the weekend.

Maria Robertson, the Director of Communications & PR for DPS, confirmed that the incident happened at Stephen Decatur Middle School on Friday. She provided the following statement to WCIA:

District Administrators are deeply saddened by an altercation that occurred following an eighth-grade promotion ceremony. What should have been a moment of celebration for our students and families was unfortunately disrupted by an incident involving both students and parents.

We are currently conducting a thorough investigation and will deal with individuals accordingly.

WCIA also reached out to the Decatur Police Department for more information and did not immediately hear back.
